New England Expansion Complete - Connecticut is on board; Last Chance to help Pettengill; and a Coupon!

We did it! With the addition of Connecticut Food Bank, the bread + butter project now has a nonprofit food bank partner in each of the six New England States. Connecticut Food Bank is the largest centralized source of donated, emergency food in Connecticut. Through warehouses in East Haven, Fairfield, and Waterbury, and distribution sites in New London and Stamford, they provide food products to more than 650 soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries and daycare programs in Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham counties. For the next 5 months (November - March), the bread + butter project will donate 50% of our profits to our six New England food bank partners.

Today is the last day our customers can help us make a real difference for the people served by Pettengill House, Inc. in Salisbury, MA. Pettengill signed on as our first nonprofit partner and all of our sales from the months of September and October will support their food pantry and meals programs. If you'd like your bread + butter purchase to help this great organization, today is the day. Don't delay. Visit our shop and complete your order before midnight tonight!

And to encourage you to stock up on bread + butter, the company that produces our products is offering a coupon this weekend for $5 off all orders over $30. Just use one of the coupon codes below when you place an order October 30 - November 1.

No Ginger Today...

It's Sue again, are you seeing a blogging pattern here? Yeah, it's been that kind of week for all of us so Mom is kicking in a little overtime, despite feeling really lousy with a nasty cold. I looked in the mirror today and winced, I don't think any amount of makeup is going to make me look glamorous today. Emma is going to school as Ginger Rogers for her "Dead and Famous" project and I'm jealous because I'm no Ginger today, if you know what I mean. Anyway, on the bright side, I'm not wondering where my next meal is coming from so I still have to count myself lucky.

I know I promised another announcement today but I think we'll do that tomorrow when I can give it the ample time it deserves. Meantime, check out our store and do a little shopping for yourself. Get a little, give a little. It's a very cool concept indeed.

We've Come a Long Way...Baby!

Hey all, Sue here.
It's hard to believe that the bread + butter project was a little idea we were kicking around just two short months ago. And now we are branching out to every state in New England with a plan to go national in 2010. Thanks to all of you who have embraced our mission. Your enthusiasm has kept us going on those evenings that we're up working until midnight - which is quite a few these days - wondering if we are really making a difference. I have to say though, it's a very peaceful time of day - no phones ringing, beepers buzzing or kids making demands. Not half bad.

Quite honestly, it has become increasingly challenging to keep up with the blog with all of the girls' commitments and now two of us are hacking and sniffing (me and Emma) so add that to the mix. Do I hear violins? Anyway, as long as the swine flu stays away, we will trudge on. It is becoming pretty widespread in our school system. Are you finding that as well?

Anyway, we will announce yet another partnership tomorrow and have some hunger stats. Stay tuned and don't forget to get your bread + butter holiday shopping done early while the selection is still good and items are in stock!

Welcome to the Granite State

Another food bank has come on board! We are so pleased to add the New Hampshire Food Bank to the list of non-profits that bread + butter is partnering with over the next several months. This organization is an impressive one, serving as the only food bank in the entire state and distributing over 4 million pounds of donated and surplus food to nearly 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, day care centers, senior citizen homes and substance abuse treatment centers. These agencies in turn provide food to over 95,000 men, women and children who are hungry throughout the state. Yeah, hard to believe isn't it? We want to thank them for the difference they are making.

We are very excited to learn more about the programs offered by this organization including their Frontline, Mobile Food Pantry and Backpack Programs. Our children will spend some time over the next several weeks learning more about the needs of those in New Hampshire and can report back. In the meantime, check out the New Hampshire Food Bank's Web site here to learn more about a facility that helps feed your neighbor, the woman who sits next to you at work or the boy on your son's soccer team. The faces of hunger might just surprise you. Let's help these fine folks - please consider buying a bread + butter procuct or donating today.

Our new website button - thanks to Tracey!

Hi, everyone. It's me, Emma. For the second time this week. That's a record for me. What is this picture? It's a website button. What is that? Well let me tell you. It is something we'll give to our food bank partners that they can put on their websites so that people will know they are working with us. We also used it to make a car magnet to stick on Mom's car so that she can have the bread and butter mobile instead of the pig mobile. We want to thank our new friend Tracey for creating the button, and everything else she has done for us. She is awesome. Watch for the new button on a website near you. ta ta for now

p.s. Did you notice our fish are back (scroll down to bottom of page) Don't forget to feed them for us! Especially you, Rachel.

VT is on board with bread + butter

The Vermont Foodbank is our newest partner as we move toward the New England-wide expansion of the bread + butter project, and we are so glad to welcome them on board. Vermont Foodbank is the only food bank in the state and has been serving Vermont commmunities since 1986. Vermont is where Auntie Sharon and Uncle Bob live, along with cousins Michael and Bobby, and where Sue and I have enjoyed some great skiing and weekend get-aways, especially in Stowe. It's also where is there is a tremendous amount of need. Vermont Foodbank acquires and distributes food to 270 Network Partners around the state – food shelves, pantries, senior meal programs and other community meal sites – enabling 66,000 Vermonters to eat. Plus, they have a really cool logo, which is based on an Abenaki food legend. You can read the story behind the logo and learn more about Vermont Foodbank and the services they provide by visiting their website. Vermonters love their all-wheel-drive vehicles and warm clothes in winter. This should be a great market for our bread + butter sweatshirts! Keep coming back to our blog for more news on our New England expansion, and keep spreading the word.

-Tom

Random question of the day: What is the name of the town that always makes us laugh when we are traveling to Vermont and need to stop for a bathroom break or to get a cup of coffee? Hint - It's off of Route 89, near Whaleback Mountain. Use the comments feature to enter your guesses.

Happy Make a Difference Day to You!

America's largest day of doing good, Make a Difference Day, is the fourth Saturday in October. That’s today, folks, and I’d like to invite you all join the O’Rourke family and help us make a difference through the bread + butter project. What can you do? There are lots of things, but I’ve prepared a short list of my favorites:

1. If you’re already the proud owner of a bread + butter product, wear it today. Tell people where you got it, why you bought it, and encourage them to visit www.breadandbutterproject.com to learn more. And if you haven’t already, send us a picture of yourself wearing said article so we can add it to our collection of Get Your Bread and Butter On posts on the blog.

2. Subscribe to our blog postings or follow us through Google, or become a bread + butter fan on Facebook, and encourage your friends to do the same.

3. Visit one or more of our nonprofit partners’ websites (upper right column of this page) and learn more about the important work they are doing and how you can support them.

4. Plan to make bread + butter part of your holiday gift giving this year. Add one of our products to your wish list or get an early start on your shopping and order some of our products today.

5. If you’re a parent, encourage your kids to make a difference too. Tell them to check out www.dosomething.org to get some ideas, and see what other kids are doing.

What are we doing to celebrate Make a Difference Day? Sue, Katie and Emma are participating in a Buddy Walk to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome, and I’m researching the benefits of opening a charitable gift fund through Fidelity Investments to potentially increase the amount of support we’re able to give to our nonprofit partners. Sue likes to add random questions of the day to the end of her posts. My not so random question for today is, “What are you doing to make a difference?” Use the comment feature to let us know.

Tune in tomorrow for news on another new food bank partner!

Where's Waldo? (with Emma perhaps?)

It is Emma's turn to blog be she has been hard to pin down. She is so awesome at keeping us on track during our family bread + butter meetings, coming up with great ideas and keeping everyone excited about the project. Blogging, well not so much. Every time I tell her it's her turn, she claims to have blogged the day before...hmmm.

Well it's Friday and that's good news. First thing in the morning, we are heading off to Western Mass (where I grew up) to take part in the Buddy Walk. I get to see two great friends of mine - we go way back to high school - so I'm excited. We are walking in Rylie's Circle of Friends, for a little girl who is very special to us. Unfortunately, Tom has to stay back to catch up on some work.

On Sunday I plan to get to the gym and do some work on bread + butter. There is much to do - we are trying to work out a plan to promote our products for the holidays, find some additional ways to bring products to our customers (in addition to our online store) and develop some new design ideas. ~Sue

WAIT...THERE IS AN EMMA SIGHTING!! Yes, she is here, live and in person.

Hi, It's me Emma!
We're thinking of putting our products in stores. If you know anyone who has a store and might be interested, please let us know. And my answer to the random question about who on the planet I would choose to spend an hour with is my mom, my dad, and my sister. I guess that's really three. Dad says tomorrow we'll announce a new partner. Check back to see which state it will be.
Bye all human beings and especially those with moustaches.

Rhode Islanders to benefit from bread + butter!

We are thrilled to announce the third nonprofit partner in the New England-wide expansion of the bread + butter project - the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which feeds more than 50,000 Rhode Islanders each month through a network of over 300 member agency programs. I had a chance earlier this week to visit and tour their facility in Providence. It was really impressive, and bigger than any food pantry I had ever visited, which I guess makes sense because they serve so many people through so many programs, and I am more familiar with smaller, community based organizations. While I was there, I learned a lot about the services they provide. During the last year alone, RICFB distributed 9.5 million pounds of food to people in need – more than any other year in their 27-year history. That's a lot of bread + butter, and milk, and fruits, and vegetables, and cereal, and meat, etc. I was impressed not only by the volume of food they receive and distribute, but also the programs they run. One, called Community Kitchen, is a culinary job-training program for low-income or unemployed adults. Participants in this program help the community by to creating nutritious meals for distribution to Kids Cafe, an after-school meal program for children at risk of hunger. It's a great program, and we're excited about our partnership with RICFB, which officially begins in November. In the meantime, we're happy to add their link to our growing list of partners on the right-hand column of our blog. To learn more about RICFB, check out their website.

Read our earlier announcements about partnerships with Greater Boston Food Bank and Good Shepherd Food Bank. Keep spreading the word.

Missing the Bread for our Butter

Hello bread + butterers,

It is Tuesday night and I thought I would check in to see how everyone's week is going. We have been busy fulfillinbg requests for our products, sending pitches to media outlets, securing additional partnerships with food pantries, working our day jobs and raising two incredible girls. Other than that, just kicking back, nothing much going on!!

My parents have been busy promoting bread + butter down in Florida where they now live. My mom has about 100 of our business cards and a single bread + butter t-shirt. That's all this woman needs. Trust me on this one. She is a powerhouse. Thanks Mom + Dad.

Emma is away on a camping field trip with her class and returns tomorrow. I miss my baby girl but know she is having fun. It is a different dynamic without the bread for your butter. I especially miss her this time of night when she is tired and slap happy and I can recognize her devious belly laugh from a mile away. It's usually in response to some toilet humor she is sharing with her sister. Let's just say it generally involves flatulence.

Okay, random question of the day: If you could spend one hour with anyone on the planet, who would it be? Our answers tomorrow.

~Sue

Be "Unusually Fashionable" By Katie

Hi Everyone,
Yes, yes I know it is my turn to blog. But I don't have much time you see. I have much, much homework to be done. And no I will not tell you how much I have already accomplished. That is confidential information known by only one witness, myself. I hope you fellow earthlings understand. Bread and butter has been busy sending samples out for Holiday Gift Guides. Bread and Butter products make a great gift and your doing something AWESOME in a way that's unusually fashionable at the same time. Think about that!!!! With that said,

Is it Sunday night already?

This weekend flew by at the O'Rourke household. Finally sitting down in front of the fire to relax for a bit before we all head off to bed. The highlight of our bread + butter work this weekend was an interview for Parents and Kids Magazine that Katie, Emma, Sue and I completed this morning via speakerphone, around the kitchen table in our pajamas. The reporter was excellent, and spent over an hour with us on the phone. The girls did a great job, as usual, and are becoming wonderful spokespeople for the bread + butter project. Our article will appear in the December issue, so watch for it, and pick up a free copy of the magazine in more than 60 communities surrounding Boston. We're excited about the article and its potential to help raise awareness and boost sales during the holiday shopping season. Have a great week.

Full Steam Ahead (achoo!)

Hey everyone, Sue here...(sorry to ruin the surprise Alisa!)

I haven't checked in for a few days so thought I'd take some time to update you. We are full steam ahead with our plans to expand the reach of the bread + butter project and our products continue to get rave reviews, which makes us very happy indeed! Our food bank partners are excited to work with us as we try to bring more attention to the great needs they are facing and the wonderful work they are doing. We love that you read our blogs, but we hope you will also support us by purchasing something from our e-store. If you haven't looked recently, we have SO many more products and we continue to add more each week. Take a quick PEEK!

I am fighting a nasty cold as is the norm for me this time of year when the temps start to change drastically. Did I mention that Vicks DayQuil is like freedoom in a cup? That stuff works really well and has been my savior these past few days. We have so much going on there is no time to be sick! Plus, I can't break my streak of going to the gym (and actually using the equipment). I have gone a record 4 times now since I joined a week and a half ago. I'm trying to get arms that look like Kelly Ripa's. About 4,000 more visits should do it. (She and hubby are returning to All My Children by the way, for anyone who gives a darn.)

Okay, random question of the day: If you had a "balloon" mishap involving your 6-year-old who was thought to be soaring through the sky, and scared the entire country, not to mention the cost of the first responders who were on the scene, only to find out he was hiding in your home the entire time, would you be parading your family on national television for the next 48 hours if you were NOT interested in the publicity? Discuss...

Get your bread + butter on!

BAM! This guy is heating things up in the kitchen with his bread + butter apron. Get one now for all the little cooks in your life. Better yet, layer the apron with a bread + butter long sleeve T, take a picture, and send it to us at info@breadandbutterproject.com.
Camera shy? We're always looking for more bread + butter recipes for change (those that are affordable and fill lots of bellies). Last night, as I noticed Sue working on her laptop, Emma staring at her DS, and Katie eyeing both her laptop and the TV, I put down my blackberry, shut off several of the screens and told the girls to come into the kitchen. Together we made some bisquick banana muffins, and put in some food coloring to turn them green. The kids thought that was hysterical. I thought it was better than watching TV. Want to see more bread + butter supermodels? Just enter the words: 'Get your bread' into the search box (scroll down on lower right column) on our blog to find previous posts. You can use the same feature to find our first two recipes for change. Will you submit the third?

Greater Boston Food Bank is on board with bread + butter

We are thrilled to announce the second nonprofit partner to officially sign on to the New England-wide expansion of the bread and butter project – The Greater Boston Food Bank, serving nearly 600 member hunger-relief agencies throughout eastern Massachusetts. We wanted to start our project by trying to make a difference very close to home, and we had a great response to our partnership with Pettengill House, Inc. in Salisbury, MA. As we looked to expand, it made great sense to work with the food bank in the region where I grew up and the area where Sue and I chose to raise our kids. We’re on a mission to work together as a family to help hungry people, develop a sustainable business model and find out what it takes to make a real difference. While we hope to one day make a real difference on a national scale, we think our best bet is to start locally, expand regionally, and then see what happens from there. Accordingly, our partnership with Greater Boston Food Bank is a natural and logical next step in that direction. And, because of our relationships and networks in the Greater Boston area, we believe we have the opportunity to make a really big impact here. It's where we both live and work, and also where there is a big need. We hope you’ll help us, and we ask you to keep coming back to the blog for more details about our partnership with this great agency and more news about our New England-wide expansion effort. In the meantime, check out the Greater Boston Food Bank’s website for information about the important work they're doing, upcoming events, and opportunities to support them. Thanks, and keep spreading the word.

Maine is on board with bread + butter

We are thrilled to announce the first of a number of new nonprofit partners in our New England expansion effort - the Good Shepherd Food Bank, serving hungry people throughout the entire state of Maine. We've been working to identify new partners so that we can help fill more bellies throughout the New England region. The Good Shepherd Food Bank was the first to accept our offer, and we receieved a signed partnership agreement in today's mail. We're especially happy to be helping in Maine, which is where my Mom spent her high school years. She lived in Caribou, which is the most Northeastern city in the US. Caribou is very cold in the winter and frequently makes headlines for its record-breaking snow falls and accumulation (197 inches during winter 2007/8) As a teenager, Mom worked as a car-hop at drive-in near Caribou's military base and took a few weeks off from school, along with every other kid in town, to pick potatoes each fall. Emma learned through her research this summer that Maine ranks among the top 10 states in hunger insecurity. So there is lots of work to be done there. And we have a lot more to learn about Maine. We'll share what we find on our blog in the coming weeks. We're excited about working with the good folks at Good Shepherd, and will have more to report on additional partners in other New England states later this month. Stay tuned...

Why is the shop on top?

We thought people might not be scrolling down to find our e-store embedded at the bottom of our blog, so we decided to move it up to the top. We have over 100 products now and we're adding new ones each week. What do you think of this change? Use the comment feature to let us know - or to submit other thoughts and ideas about the bread + butter project, our blog, our e-store, etc.

That was Tom, now it's Sue...
Hey, I joined Planet Fitness (yup the one dollar deal) and have gone two days in a row now. That is a record for me, the person who would rather stick needles in her eyes than do anything that makes you sweat and subsequently have to do the whole shower, shave and shine thing. I've got every excuse in the book and have yet to get that workout high everyone talks about. What is that really? And doesn't wine do the same thing with less effort? I'm just wondering.

Ben, what says you?

Katie is back from a 3-day field trip in the White Mountains. We always miss her so much when she is away because she has such a big personality. And mama loves it when all her chicks are home. They are the best!

Poor Kate?

I became enraged on Monday as I watched Kate Gosselin’s latest appearance on my favorite national morning news show. I should have changed the channel the moment I saw her face on the screen, but like too many other viewers, I was sucked in. Kate, the Kate in John and Kate Plus 8 that is, reported that her cheating and estranged husband John’s recent actions might leave her unable to buy food for her eight children. Immediately following the end of September, the month nationally recognition as Hunger Action Month, the star of one of the most successful and longest running reality TV shows in history, told the audience that she had been forced to move $100,000.00 from one of their joint bank accounts to guard against this threat. “That’s a lot of Happy Meals,” I thought. “How much did you transfer to secure your future salon visits to maintain that dye job and silly haircut?” OK, that was uncalled for, but as I mentioned before, I was enraged.

Don’t get me wrong. I do feel badly for this family. I am sorry that the parents’ marriage is breaking up. And I wish the kids didn’t have to be filmed every minute in order to live in that big mansion and support their parents’ celebrity lifestyles. I hope they’ll all be OK. But I’m honestly not too worried about the Gosselin family’s grocery bill. If they are truly at risk, they’re actually in very good company. A September 2009 Feeding America report showed big increases in requests to food banks across the country. 99% of food bank respondents reported a significant uptick in requests for food and 98% attributed the increase to requests from new visitors to food banks. If their TV show ceases production, which might be best for everyone involved, John and Kate will need to find other ways to support and provide for their kids. In this way, they are similar to the millions of non-celebrities who have lost their jobs and other income during this recession.

But let’s face it, one of the realities of Reality TV shows – and all TV shows for that matter – is that they don’t last forever. I would hope that after several successful years, John and Kate would have some kind of financial cushion or back-up plan in place. But who really knows? Kate repeatedly reports that her soon-to-be-ex receives and follows bad advice. It's quite possible that they did not plan to have the financial rug pulled out from under them, at least not this year. In that way, they might not be so different from most Americans, at least as far as circumstances go.

In terms of responding and taking action, however, I see some big differences. This summer, my family decided to do our small part to help others when we established the bread + butter project, which raises awareness about hunger issues and money for nonprofit food banks. While Kate Gosselin fields requests for media interviews, trying desperately to sure up the future of her TV show, Katie O’Rourke, my 12 year-old daughter, is continuing her volunteer service at a church that provides free lunches for hungry people.

I am sure that Ms. Gosselin helped lots of people during her former career as a nurse. If her star continues to fade, at least she has the skills and credentials to fall back on and could secure a job in a field that is always under-resourced. While it may be less glamorous than her current role as an embattled TV star, nursing is much more important. She will not have as much time for interviews or the Paparazzi, but that's OK. The demand will definitely decrease. TV producers don't tend to celebrate hardworking people who are struggling to feed their families and help others. Perhaps they should.

Lame Excuses

I will fess up right now. The reason for this short (and late) post is because I was busy watching Jim & Pam's wedding on "The Office." I'm not going to lie. And now it's so late I have nothing incredibly witty or interesting to say because my brain is mush. So there you have it, I've come clean. I promise to get a good night's sleep and share something worthwhile tomorrow.

And by the way, our readers were correct. Our junior cap sleeve tee is our top selling product. Order one today...or tomorrow morning is fine too if you're heading to bed like me. Sweet dreams friends! (Goodnight Ben Affleck)

Beyond bread + butter; How I'm helping the hungry in my hometown

Hey, everyone...
Will you be my therapist today? I don't care; you're going to be. First, ask me how I feel. Did you? Good. Well I'm glad you have concern for my feelings. Because you asked, Earthlings, Katie is feeling semi-sweet. Today I went to do volunteer work at Saint Paul's Soup Kitchen with one of the other kids in my class. I started doing this last year in 5th grade and really liked it, as I do this year. We help cut up desserts, place them on plates and trays, and serve the meal. It was sad to see the amount of people who were in need of food. But I always feel good after I go and contribute. So next time you're taking food for your plate, think about what you'll actually eat. Start with a little bit and if you're still hungry take more. And then if you're full, save leftovers for later. And if you don't eat what is on your plate, what the heck was going on in your mind in the first place? Well having that said, I hope you learned a valuable lesson. If you didn't, you're either a bad reader or, or well you just have something that went wrong when you were young.

By the way, the majority of people who voted in our first blog poll were correct. Our biggest seller to date is the junior cap sleeve T-shirt. I have one and trust me, it's awesome. Get one while you can, Earthlings.

bread + butter recipe for change #2

Our loyal followers know that we've been looking for ideas to make our blog more interactive. Recipes for change is an idea we received from one such follower. Please feel free to contribute your own favorite recipes for change (those that are affordable and can help fill a lot of bellies) by sending them to our email address: info@breadandbutterproject.com

Be sure to include your first name and last initial, as well as your city/town and state for proper attribution. By submitting a recipe, you are agreeing that your submission may be posted on our blog and included in future bread + butter fundraising efforts, including potential cookbook publications.

Do try this at home:

Potato, Corn, and Leek Chowder

2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped leeks (about 1 large)
1/2 cups finely chopped celery
1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
2 cups whole milk
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 cups fat-free, low sodium vegetable broth [you can use chicken broth if you would rather]
2 cups fresh corn kernels (about 4 ears) [in the off season, I use good quality canned corn]
2 pounds peeled, cubed Yukon Gold or Red potatoes [I leave the skins on if using red potatoes]
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
3 - 4 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

Heat butter and oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add leek, celery, and bell pepper; cook 4 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. Combine milk and flour in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Slowly add milk mixture to pan, stirring constantly. Stir in broth, corn, potato, salt, and freshly ground black pepper; bring almost to a boil and reduce heat to simmer for about 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Stir in parsley and chives.

Enjoy with bread + butter!

bread + butter video of the week

Last week, I posted a video about hungry kids in New York schools. Today, I'm passing along a link to a great video on the good work of Pettengill House, Inc., the bread + butter project's first nonprofit partner. For those who don't know, 50% of our profits during the months of September and October will support the food pantry and meals programs at Pettengill. I hope you'll all take a little time out of your busy day to watch this 12-minute video. I know you'll be impressed by what you see, and I think some of you might be inspired and want to support Pettengill. You can do that in a number of different ways, including purchasing one of our products or making a direct donation of cash or food items. You can find the most needed items for the food pantry on the donations page at the Pettengill House website. Thanks and keep spreading the word.

Our first bread + butter recipe for change

What's this? you might ask. We've been looking for ideas to make our blog more interactive, and a few of our followers suggested that sharing recipes might help. Our friend Jen started us off with one of her favorites.

Baked Blueberry-Pecan French Toast

1 Baguette
6 large eggs
3 cups whole milk
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup pecans
1/2 stick of butter plus 1 tsp
1/4 tsp salt
3 cups blueberries (1 cup is for syrup)(prefer fresh, but frozen works also)
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. Cut baguette in about 20, 1 inch slices and arrange in 1 layer in baking dish. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, milk, nutmeg, vanilla and 3/4 cup brown sugar and pour over bread. Cover and chill until all the liquid is absorbed by the bread (at least 8 hours or overnight).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a shallow pan , spread pecans evenly and toast in middle of the oven until fragrant (about 6 minutes). Toss with 1 tsp. butter and salt and set aside.

Increase oven to 400 degrees.

Sprinkle 2 cups of blueberries over bread mixture. Cut 1/2 stick butter into pieces and in a small saucepan heat with remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar, stirring until butter is melted. Drizzle butter mixture over bread and bake until browned and blueberries are bubbling (20-30 minutes). Sprinkle with pecans and serve with blueberry syrup (recipe follows)

Blueberry syrup:

Remaining 1 cup of blueberries
maple syrup (preferably pure)
Lemon juice

In a small saucepan, cook blueberries and syrup over moderate heat until berries have burst. Pour syrup through a sieve into a heatproof bowl, pressing on solids. Discard mashed solids. Stir in lemon juice. Serve warm with french toast. Syrup may be made 1 day ahead and stored in fridge. Warm before serving.

bread + butter recipes for change

A few days back, we asked our blog visitors for ideas about how we could promote our New England expansion. Our friend Jen mentioned a cookbook. "Anonymous" expanded on the idea as follows:

"I like the cookbook idea. I think you should call it bread + butter recipes for change because you are making a positive change by helping bread + butter, and the recipes are affordable ones that you can make with just a little bit of money. Make your blog followers help you write it by having them submit the recipes and then posting them on the website. This could be a regular feature that keeps people coming back."

Sue and I agree that this is a great idea that we can implement immediately. But again, we need your help. Send us your best recipe for change (according to the criteria described above) at our email address: info@breadandbutterproject.com

At the end of your email, please be sure to include your first name, last initial, and city and town so that we can give you proper credit. Here is an example:
